Dermatol Clin 2001; 19: 711–26, ix. 14 Brocq’s alopecia pattern: irregularly or geometrically shaped, variably atrophic and hypopigmented, clustered, and well-demarcated plaques of hairless skin. 8 Senescent alopecia (“senile alopecia” or “senescent balding”) The diagnostic criteria for senescent balding, as enumerated by Kligman, are “(i) no family history of male pattern balding and (ii) decreased hair density that does not become apparent until after about age 50 years” (1).

Some hair shafts appear too small to be terminal and too large to be vellus. It is most convenient to label such hairs as indeterminate. After all hairs are counted, a half of all indeterminate hairs are assigned to the terminal hair group, and the other half of the indeterminate hairs are assigned to the vellus hair group. This distribution of indeterminate hairs allows for simple calculation of a T:V ratio. For example, if there are nine terminal hairs, six indeterminate hairs, and three vellus hairs, the T:V is 12:6 or 2:1.
